Date and time of birth

Accurate birth time determines your Lagna (Ascendant) and Dasha starting point.

How this is calculated

The calculator converts your birth date and time to Universal Time using the timezone of your birthplace, then computes the Moon's sidereal longitude with the Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Indian government's Rashtriya Panchang.

The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each. The nakshatra holding your Moon sets the first Mahadasha lord, and the share of that nakshatra the Moon has not yet crossed sets how much of that first period was still left at birth. A Moon at the very start of Rohini, for example, begins life with almost the full 10-year Moon Mahadasha; a Moon near its end begins with only a few months of it.

From that starting balance the engine lays out the nine Mahadashas in the fixed Vimshottari order. Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas, and each Antardasha into nine Pratyantardashas, in proportion to each planet's years out of 120. Years are counted as 365.2425 days. If the Swiss Ephemeris is unavailable, a simpler fallback runs and the result is labelled approximate.

What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the planetary period system most widely used in Vedic astrology (Jyotish). Vimshottari means 120: the full cycle lasts 120 years and is shared by nine grahas. The rules come from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the classical text attributed to the sage Parashara.

Unlike a transit, which depends on where the planets are today, your Dasha sequence is fixed at birth by the Moon's nakshatra. Astrologers read the running Dasha first to name the chapter of life you are in, then use transits such as Sade Sati for finer timing.

How long is each Mahadasha?

Each planet rules a fixed number of years, always in the same order. The table lists them in sequence; after Mercury the cycle returns to Ketu. Most people live through five to seven Mahadashas, because the first one is usually only partly left at birth.

Vimshottari Mahadasha lengths in sequence
Mahadasha lordLength
Ketu7 years
Venus (Shukra)20 years
Sun (Surya)6 years
Moon (Chandra)10 years
Mars (Mangal)7 years
Rahu18 years
Jupiter (Guru)16 years
Saturn (Shani)19 years
Mercury (Budh)17 years

What is the difference between Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha?

The Mahadasha is the major period, lasting 6 to 20 years. Inside it run nine Antardashas (also called Bhuktis), starting with the Mahadasha lord itself. Inside each Antardasha run nine Pratyantardashas, which last from a few days to several months.

The length of a sub-period is the Mahadasha's years multiplied by the sub-lord's years, divided by 120. Saturn's Antardasha inside Jupiter's Mahadasha therefore lasts 16 × 19 ÷ 120 = 2.53 years, about two years and six months.

Which Dasha am I in right now?

Your Sun sign or Moon sign alone cannot tell you. The answer depends on the exact nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth and how far through it the Moon had travelled, which needs your birth time and place. Enter them above and the result shows the running Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha with their end dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my current Mahadasha?

Enter your date of birth, birth time and birthplace in the calculator above. It finds the nakshatra of your Moon at birth, works out how much of the first Mahadasha was left, and counts forward to today. The result names your current Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha with their start and end dates.

Is this Dasha calculator free?

Yes. The full result is free with no sign-up: your current Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha, the Moon nakshatra and starting balance, every Antardasha in the current Mahadasha, and the complete Mahadasha timeline. Nothing on the result is locked, blurred or paid, and there are no coins or credits involved.

Why does birth time matter for Dasha?

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, roughly half a degree an hour. Because the starting balance comes from the Moon's exact position inside its nakshatra, an error of one hour can move every Dasha date by several months. If the Moon sits near a nakshatra boundary, it can change the starting planet altogether.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Choose "I don't know my birth time" and the calculator uses 12:00 noon. The result is then marked as an estimate. Your Mahadasha lord is usually still right unless the Moon was near a nakshatra boundary that day, but dates can be off by months. A birth certificate or hospital record gives the most reliable time.

Which ayanamsa does this calculator use?

It uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the Indian government standard and the default in most Jyotish software. Other ayanamsas, such as Raman, sit more than a degree away from Lahiri. That can move a borderline Moon into the next nakshatra, so results from tools using different settings can disagree.

How long does an Antardasha last?

An Antardasha lasts the Mahadasha lord's years multiplied by the sub-period lord's years, divided by 120. The shortest is the Sun's Antardasha in its own Mahadasha, about 3.6 months. The longest is Venus in Venus, 3 years and 4 months. The calculator lists every Antardasha of your current Mahadasha with dates.

Is Vimshottari Dasha the same as Sade Sati?

No. Vimshottari Dasha is a period sequence fixed at birth by the Moon's nakshatra. Sade Sati is a transit: the roughly seven and a half years when Saturn passes through the signs before, on and after your natal Moon sign. They can overlap, but they are calculated separately and answer different questions.
