How this is calculated
Your birth date and time are converted to Universal Time using the timezone of your birthplace, and the birthplace supplies the latitude and longitude. Planet positions are computed with a professional ephemeris: NASA JPL DE440 through Daanyam's astro engine, or the in-house Swiss Ephemeris.
Positions are converted from the tropical to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. The Lagna is the sidereal sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birthplace at the moment of birth. Houses are whole-sign: the Lagna sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on, which is the classical Parashari method.
The chart covers the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, and marks any planet in retrograde motion. Your Moon nakshatra and pada come from the Moon's sidereal longitude, and the current Mahadasha and Antardasha from the Vimshottari Dasha system.
What is a Vedic birth chart?
A Vedic birth chart, also called a Janma Kundli or Janam Kundali, is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born, drawn in the sidereal zodiac used by Indian astrology (Jyotish). It places the nine grahas in the twelve signs and twelve houses.
The Lagna (ascendant) sets which sign is the 1st house, and the houses are counted from there. Astrologers read the chart for temperament, career, relationships and timing, and combine it with the Dasha system to see which planet's period is active.
How is a Vedic chart different from a Western chart?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars. The gap between them, the ayanamsa, is about 24 degrees today, so most planets fall one sign earlier in a Vedic chart than in a Western one.
Vedic astrology also gives the Moon a central role, divides the sky into 27 nakshatras, and times life events with Dashas rather than progressions.
How do I read the North Indian chart?
In the North Indian diamond style, the houses are fixed and the signs move. The top central diamond is always the 1st house, and the houses run counter-clockwise from there. The number in each house is the sign number, where 1 is Aries (Mesha) and 12 is Pisces (Meena).
Planets are written inside the house they occupy. The table under the chart gives the same placements in words, with retrograde planets marked.
Do I need an exact birth time?
For the Lagna and houses, yes. The rising sign changes about every two hours, and the Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day. Planet signs other than the Moon rarely change within a day, so they stay right even with an approximate time.

Is this Vedic birth chart really free?
Yes. The full chart is free and needs no sign-up: Lagna, the sign, house and retrograde status of all nine grahas, the North Indian chart, your Moon nakshatra and pada, and your current Mahadasha and Antardasha. Nothing on the result is locked, blurred or paid, and there are no coins or credits involved.
What details do I need for a birth chart?
You need your date of birth, your birth time and your birthplace. The birthplace gives the latitude, longitude and timezone, which matter because the Lagna depends on where the eastern horizon was. A birth certificate or hospital record usually gives the most reliable time. Without a time, the chart uses 12:00 noon.
Which ayanamsa and house system are used?
The chart uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the Indian government standard, and whole-sign houses, where each sign is one complete house counted from the Lagna. This is the classical Parashari approach followed by most Indian astrologers. Other tools using a different ayanamsa or house system can place a planet differently.
What is Lagna in a birth chart?
Lagna, or the ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your time and place of birth. It becomes the 1st house and decides which sign rules every other house. Because it changes about every two hours, the Lagna is the part of the chart most sensitive to birth time.
Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned with the fixed stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, aligned with the equinoxes. They currently differ by about 24 degrees. So if your Western Sun is in early Leo, your Vedic Sun is usually in Cancer (Karka). Neither is an error; they measure from different points.
What does retrograde mean in a Kundli?
A retrograde planet appears, from Earth, to move backwards through the zodiac for a while. It is an optical effect of the Earth and the planet moving at different speeds. Retrograde planets are marked in the table. Rahu and Ketu always move backwards and are conventionally treated as retrograde, so they are not flagged separately.
Is a Vedic birth chart the same as a Kundli?
Yes. Kundli, Kundali, Janam Kundli, Janma Patrika and Vedic birth chart all refer to the same thing: the chart of the sky at your birth in the sidereal zodiac. Janma Patrika often also means a written report built from that chart. The chart on this page is the calculation itself.
