Global Hindu Festival Timing Index 2027
Festival civil dates can shift by city because tithi is judged at local sunrise. Start with Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, then compare the same 2027 festivals across major diaspora cities — each row uses that city's coordinates and timezone.
Why Hindu festival timings change by location
Hindu festival dates follow the Panchang — a location-dependent calendar. A tithi (lunar day) begins and ends at a precise astronomical instant, but which civil date you observe depends on whether that tithi is active at your local sunrise (or at local sunset for some evening festivals).
Converting an India timetable to another timezone does not work: sunrise in New York is not Delhi minus 10.5 hours as a calendar rule. Timezone and daylight saving change how absolute tithi boundaries map onto local clock time — and can move the observance to an adjacent Gregorian day.
This index evaluates Panchang conditions at each city's coordinates. When every city shares Delhi's date, we show that. When Sydney or Los Angeles shifts by a day, we show that too.
Where the civil date shifts vs Delhi
- Bhai Dooj: 6 of 22indexed cities differ from Delhi's civil date
- Dhanteras: 3 of 22indexed cities differ from Delhi's civil date
- Diwali / Lakshmi Puja: 4 of 22indexed cities differ from Delhi's civil date
- Dussehra / Vijayadashami: 10 of 22indexed cities differ from Delhi's civil date
- Ganesh Chaturthi: 10 of 22indexed cities differ from Delhi's civil date
Not in this index yet
- Maha Shivaratri— Nishita (midnight) observance rule is not yet implemented in the production resolver; India date is Drik-sourced on the festival page.
- Onam— Thiruvonam follows solar Chingam / Kerala nakshatra conventions not covered by the tithi rule engine.
How these timings are calculated
Calculated using Daanyam's stated Panchang convention: Smarta purnimanta month labels, tithi sampled at local sunrise (Pradosh festivals use local sunset). India anchor dates use Delhi coordinates (28.6139°N, 77.209°E). Diaspora cities use catalog coordinates and IANA timezones including daylight saving where applicable.
- Ephemeris: astronomia (sync) with Lahiri ayanāṃśa for nakshatra; Astro Engine when enabled for month strips.
- Sunrise/sunset: NOAA-style solar approximation at observer coordinates.
- Version: festival-index-2027.1:astronomia-sync

For journalists and publishers
This index lists location-specific Hindu festival civil dates and observance windows for 2027, computed from latitude, longitude, and IANA timezone — not by shifting India Standard Time. Methodology: How we compute. Last updated: 2026-08-28. Questions: partners@daanyam.in.

Common questions
- Why can a Hindu festival fall on a different date outside India?
- Festival dates follow the tithi active at local sunrise (or local sunset for some evening observances). Tithi boundaries are global instants, but the civil date depends on your location's sunrise — not on converting India Standard Time.
- Does this index simply convert IST festival times to other timezones?
- No. Each city uses its own latitude, longitude, and IANA timezone. Tithi is evaluated at that city's sunrise (or sunset for Pradosh festivals), recomputed from astronomical positions.
- Which Panchang convention does Daanyam use?
- This index uses Smarta purnimanta month labels and sunrise-anchored tithi unless noted otherwise (e.g. Vaishnava Janmashtami may differ). See How we compute for the full pipeline.
