Your Vedic moon sign (called your rashi or Chandra rashi) is the zodiac sign the Moon was travelling through at the exact moment you were born, measured against the fixed stars. To find it you need your date, time and place of birth, then a sidereal calculator such as the free Daanyam moon sign calculator. Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, your moon sign is often different from the Western sign you may have seen online.
In Jyotish, the Moon sign is the foundation of a reading. It describes the mind, emotions and instinctive reactions, and it sets the base for the dasha timeline, compatibility matching and the Sade Sati check. This guide explains how to find your moon sign, why the birth time matters, what each of the 12 signs represents, and how to use the result.

Use the Free Moon Sign CalculatorWhat is a moon sign in Vedic astrology?
A moon sign is the sign (rashi) occupied by the Moon in your birth chart. The Moon travels through all 12 signs in about 27 and a third days, so it spends roughly two and a quarter days in each one. That is why the moon sign changes far more often than the Sun sign, which stays in one sign for about a month.
In Indian families the question "what is your rashi?" always means your moon sign, not your Sun sign. Name syllables, wedding matching, the Sade Sati check and the daily rashifal (horoscope) are all based on the moon sign. If you grew up reading Sun-sign horoscopes in the West, this is the biggest shift in how Jyotish works.
How do I find my moon sign?
Follow these steps to get an accurate result:
- Collect your birth details: date, exact time (check your birth certificate or ask a parent), and the city or town of birth.
- Open a sidereal (Vedic) moon sign calculator. Western tools use the tropical zodiac and will give a different answer.
- Enter the date, time and place. The calculator converts your local time to a universal time using the time zone and daylight-saving rules that applied at your birthplace on that date.
- Read the Moon's sign and its nakshatra (lunar mansion). The sign is your rashi; the nakshatra is the finer layer inside it.
- Note the Moon's degree within the sign. If it is very close to 0 degrees or 30 degrees, confirm your birth time carefully (see below).
The Daanyam calculator runs these steps with the Swiss Ephemeris and returns both your Chandra rashi and your Moon nakshatra. If you were born outside India, enter your actual birthplace; the tool handles the time zone for you.
Why is my Vedic moon sign different from my Western moon sign?
Western astrology measures the zodiac from the spring equinox (the tropical zodiac). Vedic astrology measures it from the fixed stars (the sidereal zodiac). The gap between the two is the ayanamsa, which is roughly 24 degrees today under the widely used Lahiri system.
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so a 24-degree shift is a little under two days of lunar motion. Each sign is 30 degrees wide, so for many people the sidereal Moon falls one sign earlier than the tropical Moon. For some people the two signs match. If you were born when the Moon was in the first 24 degrees or so of a tropical sign, your Vedic moon sign is usually the previous sign.
| Question | Vedic (sidereal) | Western (tropical) |
|---|---|---|
| Zodiac anchored to | Fixed stars | Spring equinox / seasons |
| Moon sign usually called | Rashi or Chandra rashi | Moon sign |
| Typical difference | Often one sign earlier | Often one sign later |
| Used for | Dasha, matching, Sade Sati, rashifal | Psychological profile, transits |
| Extra layer | 27 nakshatras and 4 padas | Not used |
Neither is a mistake. They answer different questions. If you want the full comparison of the two systems, read our guide on how a Vedic birth chart differs from a Western natal chart.

Vedic vs Western Birth ChartDoes birth time matter for finding my moon sign?
Yes, but less than it does for your rising sign. The Moon changes sign about once every two and a quarter days, and it moves roughly half a degree per hour. For most people, being off by an hour or two does not change the sign. It can change the answer if the Moon was within a degree or so of a sign boundary at your birth.
If your calculator shows the Moon very near 0 or 30 degrees of a sign, treat the result as provisional. Check the birth time on your hospital record and run the calculator again with a slightly earlier and later time. If the sign flips, it is worth asking an astrologer to rectify the birth time before relying on the rashi for matching or important decisions.
Your rising sign (lagna) changes about every two hours, so it is far more sensitive to birth time than the moon sign is. If you also want yours, the lagna calculator and our lagna guide explain how it works.
What does each moon sign mean?
Each rashi has a ruling planet, which colours the way the Moon behaves there. The table below gives the classical rulers and a one-line temperament summary. These are general tendencies, not predictions; your full chart modifies all of them.
| Rashi (Vedic) | Western name | Ruling planet | General emotional tendency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha | Aries | Mars | Quick, direct, impatient to act |
| Vrishabha | Taurus | Venus | Steady, comfort-seeking, loyal |
| Mithuna | Gemini | Mercury | Curious, talkative, restless mind |
| Karka | Cancer | Moon | Nurturing, sensitive, home-oriented |
| Simha | Leo | Sun | Proud, warm, wants recognition |
| Kanya | Virgo | Mercury | Analytical, careful, service-minded |
| Tula | Libra | Venus | Balanced, fair, avoids conflict |
| Vrishchika | Scorpio | Mars | Intense, private, determined |
| Dhanu | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Optimistic, philosophical, free-spirited |
| Makara | Capricorn | Saturn | Disciplined, ambitious, reserved |
| Kumbha | Aquarius | Saturn | Independent, detached, humanitarian |
| Meena | Pisces | Jupiter | Imaginative, compassionate, intuitive |
The Moon is strongest in Vrishabha (its sign of exaltation) and weakest in Vrishchika (its sign of debilitation), and Karka is its own sign. A strong Moon usually supports emotional steadiness, while an afflicted Moon is traditionally linked with a restless mind. The house the Moon occupies and the planets that aspect it matter as much as the sign itself.
What is the difference between moon sign, nakshatra and lagna?
These three are often confused, but each answers a different question:
- Moon sign (rashi): the sign the Moon occupies. It describes your mind and emotional habits and is used for matching and Sade Sati.
- Nakshatra: the Moon's position among the 27 lunar mansions, each 13 degrees 20 minutes wide. Every nakshatra has four padas, so each sign holds nine padas. Your nakshatra decides which planet's dasha you are born into.
- Lagna (ascendant): the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It sets the houses of your chart and describes body, outlook and how you meet the world.
Together they give a much fuller picture than a Sun sign alone. If you only know one of them, run the others as well: the nakshatra calculator and the lagna calculator use the same birth details.

Lagna (Ascendant) ExplainedWhat can I do with my moon sign once I know it?
Knowing your rashi unlocks several practical uses in Jyotish:
- Daily and yearly horoscope. Indian rashifal is written for the moon sign, so read the forecast for your Chandra rashi rather than your Sun sign.
- Sade Sati. This is the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn transits the sign before your moon sign, your moon sign, and the sign after it. You can only check it once you know your rashi.
- Kundli matching. Ashtakoota (36-guna) matching compares the two partners' moon signs and nakshatras, which is why a correct rashi matters before a wedding match.
- Names and naming. Traditional name syllables come from the Moon's nakshatra pada at birth.
- Dasha timeline. The Moon's nakshatra fixes your starting Vimshottari mahadasha and when each later period begins.
For the planetary side of each sign, the guide to rashi lords explains how the ruling planet shapes behaviour, and the love compatibility guide shows which signs tend to match well.

Rashi Lord GuideFrequently asked questions about moon signs
Is my moon sign the same as my zodiac sign?
Not usually. Your zodiac or Sun sign comes from where the Sun was at birth. Your moon sign comes from the Moon, which changes sign every couple of days. In Vedic astrology the moon sign is the main sign, so it is the one used in rashifal and matching.
Can I find my moon sign without my birth time?
Often yes. Because the Moon stays in a sign for over two days, the date alone gives the right sign for most people. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date, you will need the approximate time to know which side of the change you were born on.
Which moon sign is best?
No sign is better than another. Strength depends on the Moon's house, aspects, nakshatra and dasha. Karka and Vrishabha are the Moon's strongest placements, but a well-placed Moon in any sign supports a stable mind.
Does my moon sign change over time?
No. Your natal moon sign is fixed by your birth moment. What changes is where the transiting Moon and other planets are relative to it, which is what daily and yearly forecasts track.
Do I use my moon sign or Sun sign for horoscopes in India?
Use your moon sign. Indian newspapers, apps and astrologers write rashifal for the Chandra rashi, so the Sun-sign horoscope you know from Western sources will not match.
