The observance is rooted in Shaiva tradition and connected with Shiva's cosmic dance and the grace of Nandi. Devotees fast through the day or take a partial fast, visit Shiva temples at twilight, offer abhishek to the Shiva Lingam, chant "Om Namah Shivaya," recite the Pradosha Vrat katha, and circumambulate Nandi before receiving darshan of Shiva.
Gau Seva on Pradosham is especially meaningful because Nandi, Shiva's vahana and foremost devotee, embodies the sacred bovine presence in Shaiva worship. Feeding cows or bulls on Pradosham honours Nandi and Gaumata together, turning the devotee's prayer for forgiveness, health, and protection into an act of care for the beings most beloved to Shiva.
