The twelve houses in Vedic astrology are twelve life themes counted from Lagna, the sidereal rising sign. Daanyam uses whole-sign houses. The sign of Lagna is the entire first house, and each following sign is the next house. This page is that map. It does not assign a job title, a marriage year, or a house degree.
Definition
A house, or bhava, is a field of life. In the whole-sign system the cusp is the start of the sign, not a degree inside it. The lord of a house is the lord of the sign on that house. It is not a separate planet invented for the house. Career timing and marriage timing use the 10th and the 7th as part of a larger reading. They are not separate house products.
How it works
House 1 is the rashi of Lagna. House 2 is the next sidereal sign, and so on through house 12. Birth time is required because Lagna moves through the day.
A graha in a sign occupies the house whose sign that is, counted from Lagna. The same Moon sign can fall in different houses for two people with different rising signs.
The 1st house is the person, the 7th is partnership, and the 10th is public work. The career guide and the marriage-timing guide apply those themes. This page does not repeat them as predictions.
Reference
Whole-sign houses counted from Lagna. Themes are traditional fields of life, not outcomes.
| House | Traditional field |
|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body, and the way a person meets the world. This is Lagna. |
| 2nd | Family resources, speech, and what is gathered. |
| 3rd | Courage, siblings, skills, and short journeys. |
| 4th | Home, mother, and the private base. |
| 5th | Children, learning, and creative intelligence. |
| 6th | Daily work, service, conflict, and illness. |
| 7th | Marriage and other one-to-one partnerships. |
| 8th | Shared resources, sudden change, and longevity. |
| 9th | Teachers, dharma, and long travel. |
| 10th | Career, status, and public work. |
| 11th | Gains, friends, and aims. |
| 12th | Loss, foreign residence, sleep, and release. |
Worked example
For the published golden birth, Lagna is Vrishchika (sidereal Scorpio), so house 1 is that sign and house 10 is Simha (sidereal Leo). The Moon is in Kumbha (sidereal Aquarius), which is whole-sign house 4 from that Lagna. Those are natal facts for one birth, not a career or a marriage result.

A common confusion
House and sign are not the same word for the same thing. A sign is a 30° stretch of the zodiac. A house is that sign's role once Lagna is known. Placidus houses, common in Western apps, can put a planet in a different house. Daanyam does not compute those cusps on this page.
Calculate it
The Vedic birth chart page opens a personal chart, which is where houses become yours. This guide does not embed the form.
How the numbers are computed
The engine's default house system is whole sign. The method page records that convention and the ayanamsa. This table does not print cusps in degrees.
Questions
What are the 12 houses in Vedic astrology?
They are twelve life themes counted from the sidereal Lagna. Daanyam uses whole-sign houses, so each house is one entire rashi. House 1 is the rising sign.
What is a house lord?
The lord of a house is the lord of the rashi on that house. If Lagna is Vrishchika, Mars rules the 1st house because Mars rules Vrishchika. The lord is not a thirteenth planet.
Should each house have its own page?
No. The 7th and the 10th matter, and they are rows here. Career and marriage timing are separate guides because those questions are about a reading, not about a dictionary entry.
