Naming follows the Nakshatra, not the Rashi. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada is assigned a specific starting syllable (akshara). The baby's Moon pada at birth gives the traditional first letter of the name. The Rashi matters too — it colours temperament and is used across other readings — but when elders ask for the 'naming letter,' it is the nakshatra pada that decides it.
The Moon's exact sidereal longitude at birth places it in one nakshatra pada out of 108 (27 nakshatras × 4 padas). Classical tables map every pada to a syllable — for example Ashwini's padas give Chu, Che, Cho, La. With an exact time, the kundli pins the pada (naming letters), the Lagna, and the Gandmool check reliably. If the time is approximate, the Rashi is usually still stable, but treat borderline pada results carefully before finalising a name.
